Ecological landscape design, Unit44. Contractor, Butec. The base camp is conceived to host 500 workers and administrative staff operating the gas extraction in the desert of Adrar, one of the toughest locations on the planet. The project requires dealing with extreme climatic conditions, very high temperatures, as well as sandstorms. Additionally, security controls and measures needed to be taken to protect the base from potential terrorist attacks, thus including a military base housing 80 soldiers. But the most challenging issue is to provide attributes that would alleviate the isolation and the hard working conditions for GTIM’s and Total’s employees. Thus, the first step of the project was to create a garden to bestow the conditions of an oasis. The landscape plan is the guiding framework providing a variety of gardens, from the most intensive to the most extensive - the palm grove, the kitchen garden, the extensive belt, and the sand barriers. The project is built using light weight metallic structures. However, the choice of colors, the external wall and finishing, as well as the two traditional buildings, are inspired by the palette common to the vernacular architecture of Timimoun and its reinterpretation by the French modern architect, Fernand Pouillon. |
