Project summary

The project is a research on a 4th generation of motorways gas-station relay and rest areas. Today the notion of a gas station extends much further than the simple concept of it being a rest area for a quick meal in the middle of a remote landscape. It is the place for a new urbanity that creates an interface between the territorial scale of the highways and the local scale of the countryside. It allows a direct contact between the travelers and the local population, generating an exchange of goods and services. The road will not deplete the countryside but offers services like warehousing, health services, and markets. The countryside offers its products, food and beverage, lodges, and various other amenities. The typologies must adapt to different situations, at the entrance of cities or in the middle of the desert, and be able to evolve and grow in reference to the local demand. In order to manage the change of scale, the project uses a reflection on the ideas of the Istiraha, Funduq, and Khan.
